Uldin listened to the carnage outside, the shouts and blasts going on and on. The security forces definitely gave it their all, but they weren’t winning. In fact, he felt convinced they were on the verge of losing the fight and when they did, he had no idea what might happen to him and his uncle.

They haven’t come in for us yet. Uldin wondered if that was opportunity or patience. They might know I’ll take someone’s head off if they charge in her at this point.

“What’s going on?” Essa whispered. “What’s all the shooting?”

“People trying to save us,” Uldin replied. “I think we have to go back the way we came. Get deeper in the cave for now.”

“Why?”

“Because when they come, I want range.” Uldin urged him on, shoving at his back.

“I don’t understand that.”

“This is a long tunnel, uncle. If they come charging down here, I want to let them get halfway before I open fire. That will guarantee me some hits. I can finish some of them off. Prevent them from regrouping and starting all over.” At least that’s how I hope this situation will go. If there are too many of them, this pistol won’t help much.

“After her!” Whoever shouted that had some lung power. Uldin couldn’t believe he heard the man not only above all the other noises, but through a helmet as well.

I guess their commander’s angry. Uldin wondered how many men he might send after the person he wanted. Enough to give us some breathing room at best. They reached the turn and he stopped his uncle, crouching by the wall to lean out. He took aim, keeping his weapon poised.

“Essa Helsh!” The loud guy barked down the tunnel. “I know you’re in there! I know you were not crushed. We have you on scans. Come out peacefully and we will not harm you or your guide. I don’t care what you did. Believe me, we need you as much as you need us right now!”

Uh-huh. Uldin rolled his eyes. Who does this fool think he is? No one’s going to believe you, scum! Kahls rarely bothered with subterfuge or flat out lying. They killed people. And here they are trying to kidnap my uncle! What do they want Essa for!? He looked back at the older man; the befuddled genius who paced in the dark.

“Essa… why do you think they want you?”

“Hm? What? Who wants me? What’re you talking about?”

“Did you ignore that man’s shouts?” Uldin asked. “The Kahl. They want you for some reason. Why do you think that is?”

“I have no idea! I don’t pretend to understand the minds of lunatics!”

Uldin sighed. “Isn’t that part of your research? To understand these people?”

“The Kahls?! Well… yes. The ancient versions of them. Not whatever these brutes are. They were a warrior race before with some sense of honor but now, whatever they’ve become, they aren’t that. Look at this mindless assault! Just here to kill and rob! To steal things and leave without any sign of remorse.
